Disabling Gemini in Google Apps

Unfortunately, much to the dismay of many: the Google Gemini AI tool can not be fully removed from your account, as it is already integrated into current subscriptions and can not be completely deleted from standard Google accounts. However, there are several ways to disable this product from processing your data, and being a hindrance. 

To disable Gemini in Google Docs and other Google apps: 

  1. In any Google Doc file, click 'Gemini' in the horizontal toolbar. 
  2. Click 'Bottom bar preferences'.
  3. Then, select and switch to 'turn off'.

To disable Gemini in Gmail: 

  1. Click the Settings gear icon in the taskbar of Gmail. 
  2. Click to 'see all settings'.
  3. in 'General', scroll to 'Google Workspace smart features'.
  4. Click to 'Manage Workspace'.
  5. Proceed to turn off smart features in Google Workspace, and Google products. 
  6. Click 'save'.

To disable Gemini on the Chrome Browser: 

  1.  Open Chrome on your computer. 
  2. In the top right corner click the 'More' menu represented by three vertical dots.
  3. Then go to 'Settings', 'System', and then toggle 'On-device AI'.
  4. Click to turn it off. 

How to disable Google AI Overview search results from (Google Chrome): 

  1. Open Chrome and put chrome://settings/searchEngines in the search box.
  2. A new tab will open, go to 'Search Engine', then 'Manage Search Engines and Site Search'.
  3. Click on the 'Add' button by the 'Site Search Update' option. A new box will open.
  4. Fill in the form with the following:
    1. Name: AI Free Web
    2. Shortcut: @web
    3. URL: {google:baseURL}search?q=%s&udm=14
  5. You’ll now see AI Free Web in the list.
  6. Click on the three stacked dots on the right side of this new option. Select 'Make Default'.
